Extreme Facial Injuries

Utrecht photographer Ashkan Honarvar is responsible for some pretty provocative works of art, but this 2009 collection entitled “Faces 5″ has us mesmerized.

Honarvar uses present-day models to recreate portraits that were taken of WWI soldiers who suffered extreme facial injuries, and then super imposes candy imagery over the wounds in an attempt to address issues of identity and the lasting psychological effects of combat.

Melting ice cream, colourful sprinkles, jellybeans, sticky frosting and stringy liquorice laces appear to ooze out of open wounds, leaving viewers not quite sure if they should be hungry or grossed out.
