Arranging compact spaces seems to be one of the main issue in modern living, especially in apartments and lofts, where the one living inside often have limited control to the space they live in. In this case architects and also home owners Lynda and Peter Benoit has come up with a solution to this issue, with their idea of a Box Within a Box.

The loft, located in California, sits on the top floor of the Besler Building, with big steel-framed window facing the street. The unit is a poorly planned 1.100 sq ft with generous ceiling height, due to the building’s previous function as a steam engine factory. The project was to create a space-efficient room divider that compliments a modern spatial arrangement, and allows privacy for the main bedroom. And so the Benoits came up with this multi-functional wooden box that encloses a bedroom, while at the same time serves as a storage unit. The box stands 10 ft high, and span 16 by 17 ft wide. On one side, it serves as a big book shelf, interacting with the living room in front of it. On this side is also the door, connecting the living room and the bedroom, providing natural lighting inside the box. On the adjacent side is a stair and under it a cabinet. The stairs lead to the top of the box where the dressing room is.
